Marine officials have identified Pvt. Patrick Armando Vega, 21, as the recruit who died Sunday at the Naval Medical Center San Diego after suffering cardiac arrest.
Vega died following hospitalization Saturday from a medical emergency that occurred at the recruit depot, according to a command release released Tuesday afternoon.
A drill instructor initially found Vega unresponsive around midnight on Friday and conducted CPR until first responders arrived.
Vega was transported to the off-base Navy medical center where he remained in critical condition.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Pvt. Vega during this difficult time,” Brig. Gen. William Jurney, commanding general of the San Diego recruit depot, said in a news release.
The medical center is conducting a review, and the command has started a preliminary investigation into the incident.
