WASHINGTON — The Obama administration says the U.S. will be represented by its ambassador to Russia at a military parade in Moscow next month. The event marks the 70th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany.
The State Department said Thursday that the U.S. honors the sacrifice of those who fought the Nazis during World War II, including millions of Russians. But the department says it considered Russia's actions in Ukraine in deciding on official American representation at the May 9 parade and had settled on ambassador John Tefft.
The department suggests that other countries consider the same issue when determining their representation.
Several Western leaders have snubbed invitations to the military parade because of the Ukraine conflict. But at least 26 world leaders will attend, including some from Europe.
