The Marine whistle-blower who accused the commandant of meddling in military justice pinned on a new rank this month.
James Weirick, an attorney who filed a series of complaints with the Defense Department Inspector General's office alleging legal misconduct by Commandant Gen. Jim Amos and his advisers, was promoted to lieutenant colonel Sept. 1. Weirick, who has served in the Marine Corps for 17 years, was selected for the rank in Dec. 2012, prior to making the complaints.
In a series of decisions issued in the last 12 months, Amos and his staff were cleared of all allegations related to Weirick's claim that Amos and his staff illegally manipulated the justice system in the prosecution of Marine scout snipers who urinated on an enemy corpse in the war zone.
Weirick, who declined to make a further statement, said he was promoted on schedule and that the process was never placed on hold due to his complaints or the attending controversy. He is stationed in Suffolk, Va., and works in Joint Force Development in support of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
