Sgt. Maj. Darryl Cherry, the senior enlisted leader for the 2nd Marine Logistics Group at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, has been fired, a spokesman confirmed.
Brig. Gen. David Maxwell, commanding general for 2nd MLG, removed Cherry from his leadership post on Oct. 3, said 2nd Lt. Zackary Buckon, a spokesman for 2nd MLG.
"Maxwell cited a lack of trust and confidence in Sgt.Maj. Cherry's ability to lead as the reason for his relief pending completion of an investigation," Buckon told Marine Corps Times.
Buckon declined to elaborate on the specifics of Cherry's relief because a 2nd MLG command investigation into the matter is ongoing.
Cherry's official biography no longer appears on 2nd MLG's website, which says that Navy Master Chief Christopher Rebana is serving as the group's top enlisted leader.
Cherry declined to comment on Monday. His Linkedin page still indicates that he is sergeant major for 2nd MLG. It also says he joined the Marine Corps in August 1987 and served as the director of the Staff Noncommissioned Officer's Academy at Quantico, Virginia, from August 2012 to November 2014.
In a January news story from II Marine Expeditionary Force, then-commander of 2nd MLG Brig. Gen. Charles Chiarotti praised Cherry for his efforts to renovate the building for the Corporals' Course at Camp Lejeune.
