A Marine assigned to Marine Corps Installations Pacific was found dead Monday morning off the coast of Camp Schwab, Okinawa.
Officials did not immediately release the Marine’s identity or circumstances surrounding the death. The Marine was found at approximately 11 a.m. local time (10 pm Sunday night EST) by members of the Japanese coast guard, whose help the Corps had requested.
"The thoughts and prayers of the entire command are with the family, friends and coworkers of the deceased Marine," the Marine officials Corps said in a statement. "We extend our deepest gratitude to our Japan coast guard partners for their immediate professional assistance in searching for and locating our deceased Marine."
Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the circumstances and cause of the death, according to the release. The name of the deceased is typically withheld for 24 hours after notification of next of kin.
Earlier this month, a Hawaii-based Marine was found dead off the coast of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. The boat the Marine was in had capsized in waters near the base.
