Marine faces trial in fake disappearance case
Posted : Saturday Jun 27, 2009 10:22:00 EDT
BOULDER, Colo. — A discharged Marine accused of faking his disappearance to avoid returning to his unit has been deemed competent to stand trial.
Lance Hering staged his disappearance in 2006 and eluded authorities for more than two years before turning up in the Pacific Northwest.
Boulder County Court Judge John F. Stavely ruled Friday that Hering will stand trial on false reporting charges Sept. 29. Hering was discharged from the Corps in December.
Hering, a lance corporal and Iraq war veteran, was on leave from Camp Pendleton, Calif., when he disappeared in 2006. Hering has said he suffered post-traumatic stress disorder.
