SEND MORE MARINES
The commandant wants more Marines in Afghanistan. What about sending the Marines who are just sitting around? Third Battalion, 9th Marines, is on a shortened deployment to Iraq. Why can’t they go to Afghanistan if it’s so important?

Cut them some slack. We finally have some Marines getting hooked up with some extra time at home, and you want them to go to Afghanistan.

IMPROVE CHOW HALLS
One problem is that military leadership has little to no authority over civilians working in the mess halls.
When I was a regimental sergeant major, I was in the mess hall every day checking on service and quality. It appears to me, from what I have seen, that our leadership no longer visits the mess halls.

I wish there was a system where I was charged only for when I eat at the chow hall. It doesn’t seem that hard to do. Either give Marines the option of getting basic allowance for subsistence or contract a better company to make chow.

BETTER HOUSING NEEDED
I’m a sergeant who just returned to Marine Corps Base Hawaii from a seven-month deployment to Afghanistan. I was told that I would have to share a room with two other sergeants and that I couldn’t live off base. I rate my own room! I still have boxes cluttering my room because there is not enough space to store all of my things.
The Corps needs to take action to correct this situation. I am forced to live in substandard conditions.
I can deal with seven months of living in the dirt, but when I return, I should be able to come home to a place where I am comfortable.

UNSHAVEd MARINES
Some of you would have hated to see my team in Afghanistan. We stopped shaving after two weeks in country and didn’t start again until about three weeks before we headed home. It was a deployment that focused on combat — not shaving or uniforms. Shaving everyday doesn’t mean you’re a better warrior.
